I have the same problem with Modem Lights, tried your solution, but there is nothing in my /var/lock folder but another folder called /subsys. Did a search from the root for lck* and found nothing. Does this mean I don't have a modem lock file? In anycase, the bugger still doesn't work.

The applet must be running, that means you must be connected to have this lock file. Does this mean I don't have a modem lock file? In anycase, the bugger still doesn't work.
I am not an expert, but I think that this modem light applet needs a lock file. So nothing can asks your modem to connect while already connected.

Phillipe, I think you've hit it, because I do get asked to connect if I'm already connected when I click on the applet. Assuming then that the lock file does not exist, can I create it myself, and if so, where and what kind of info does it need. If you have one, could you post the content? Thanks.
FInally figured it out! I went into Network settings, double clicked the device (which I thought was 'modem0', and found it listed as 'tty4'. Change the modem lock file in Modem Lights (Advanced tab) to that setting and bingo! Blinking lights. Computer users love blinking lights!
