I have just installed Ubuntu Hoary (AMD64 version) and everything seems fine except that I cannot find the Modem Lights applet when I right-click on the top panel.
The only similar thing available from the "+Add To Panel" list is "Modem Connection" which puts a little picture of a red telephone on the panel, but that's about all that is good for as I used command-line "sudo pppconfig" to configure my dialup, and not the ubuntu set up (Menu:System/Administration/Networking) which I found to be a bit quirky.
I tried reinstalling gnome-applets etc. but still the same issue - am I missing something really simple here?
I was a KDE-man only before but Ubuntu Warty "forced" me to change my ideas, and I really loved the modem lights applet, so I would kinda appreciate some help on this one...
When I had dial up, as I remember the tool was either kinternet or kppp. Running one or the other from the terminal (right click desktop-options- check run in terminal window then type in either kppp or kinternet will yield some information as to why it is not working.
Anything with a "K" will usually be KDE, so it will not be in Gnome at all. However, many apps run in the other, so you might try to see if these two KDE apps will work on Gnome.
ingvildr - taken out? but it was so good! anyway, the Gnome gods must assume everyone has broadband these days...
bluesman2333 - with Gnome I didn't need to use kppp (although that is a great GUI tool for dialup), I just use "pon" and "poff" at the command-line to connect to the ISP...
The reason I mentioned the KDE apps was @ of your comment- "I was a KDE-man only before but Ubuntu Warty "forced" me to change my ideas, and I really loved the modem lights applet, so I would kinda appreciate some help on this one..."
That kind of sounded past tense with a KDEish past.
yeah, well I still use KDE on my laptop (with Slackware), I hope I didn't give the impression that I am anti-KDE, definitely not, but it's just that I enjoy the Ubuntu/Gnome interface a lot...
back to the original topic, I will have a look for a standalone applet that performs the modem lights function...unless someone knows of one in existence already???
"I hope I didn't give the impression that I am anti-KDE"- Not at all, I just assumed that you were wondering where the KDE apps went in Gnome. I looked in Synaptic and nothing jumped out at me.
bluesman, truth be said there were some apps I just couldn't get by without...K3B and Amarok come to mind, oh, and ktouch...I installed these from Synaptic in Ubuntu Warty, worked just fine...
JDW: Again i think it was removed because they had 3 things for the same job modem lights the monitor and the phone looking thing lol, that i think it was buggy.
