Trying to Compile Software Package. C compiler cannot create executables * Error Msg*

Hi, very new to Unix. Following step by step instructions in an online tutorial on how to download and compile a program.
After I create an install directory in my home directory,
Im told to run the configure utility to set the installation path with the following command:

% ./configure --prefix=$HOME/units174

I get the following error message:
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

im so new to this, i have no idea where to begin to try to figure out whats wrong, i did see in some threads that the config.log can maybe help out? here it is:

configure:549: checking for gcc
configure:626: checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works
configure:640: gcc -o conftest conftest.c 1>&5
./configure: line 639: gcc: command not found
configure: failed program was:
#line 636 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
main(){return(0);}
DTm:units-1.74 david$

Any help would be so appreciated...thanks

Ah, I've never used that. But you mustn't have gcc installed (or any other necessary bits & pieces for compiling).
