root window background through gtk?

I'm developing an application using the GTK and GDK libraries. I would like to provide the option for transparency but I am having some difficulty. I have figured out how to use the gdk_pixbuf_composite function. And I have managed to attain the root window and capture a GdkImage from it. However that image does not contain only the root window background but instead has the background with all other existing windows drawn onto it.

How do I go about getting just the root background?

Actually, now that I type it... I think I would rather have it with all the windows drawn on it. But for completeness sake, how do I go about doing it?

Anyone?

Thanks in advance,
jpbarto
