Programming This forum is for all programming questions.
The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Question libc or glibc

Hi,

I'm a fairly experienced programmer and have finally decided to learn c. I think I'm most interested in writing gtk/gnome applications but I don't want to narrow down my options.

So now I have the basics of the language, which library should I learn, glib or glibc. The way I understand it, glibc is the 'standard' linux c library whereas glib is the one that is designed specifically for gtk development. After a quick skim they seen to have similar functions, any thoughts on a good direction to take.

Thanks in advance

Tony

Once you start coding you'll learn what you need as you go along. You don't really need to learn either of the libraries as such: glibc is an implementation of the standard C library with nobs on (you will obviously need to know the standard C library) and glib has higher level functions. But although gtk uses glib you won't actually need to know much (if any) of glib itself.
