Many applications prefer to be started from within their directory, so if an app doesn't start well (or at all) with "wine /path/to_the/executable/program.exe", try opening a terminal, cd-ing to the directory holding the program, and then type "wine programname.exe".
Running Wine from a terminal also gives you a chance to see the output if something goes wrong (as it so often does with Wine
)
