Question Sound Problem

I recently upgraded my system hardware, and in the process, installed Win2K and Mandrake 9.1 as dual boot. Everything has worked beautifully so far,

except

I don't get any sound from the Linux side.

I have an on-board VIA audio chipset, and also a Soundblaster Live PCI card. On WIndows, I simply specified that all sound go through the Soundblaster -- everything works fine. In Linux, I see that *both* are enabled, and I get no sound at all.

Is it possible that Mandrake wants to send sound to the onboard port in preference to the Soundblaster card? (I haven't yet tried plugging speakers into the VIA port.) How can I disable the VIA port to run the output through Soundblaster?

(Everything worked fine on my old setup - which *didn't* have an onboard audio chipset.)

(I feel like a noob, yet I've been playing with Mandrake since 6.1!)

For reasons known only to mandrake, sound is muted by default in 9.1. This might be the problem and then just use aumix or kmix or whatever to crank up the volume.

I second the muted sound issue. If that doesn't work you may need to make sure ALSA sound server is running. Control Center ->System ->DrakeXservices

Same prob here. Got the same hardware and no sound. Sound was muted indeed but turning it on didn make any difference. Checked the ALSA server and that running as well.
Is it normal that the game port is listed at the unknow list in hardware? I can remember seeing that in earlier versions?
Any clues left?

Okay, twinkers. How did you do it?

Either I am totally not understanding aumix, or my problem is different. I still get no sound.

Well your problem must be different since it's so simpel.
Just open aumix en first go to Mute and....unmute. All the settings move to the left. just move them around 50% and you should be getting sound out of your speakers.
Then save the settings (File Save) and your set.
Strange is though that I tried to save on boot time and in system services I turned of Checking for new Hardware at boot. At reboot all my sound went true the on-board VIA (I heard my headphones by accident) switched it back on, reboot did the unmute thing again and now all is fine.
So perphaps that can help you aswell.

I found that if I choose Gnome and didn't go into KDE the first time after install the sound worked fine, but if I installed and went into KDE the sound was mute on every reboot.
