SMART package manager?

Can someone explain to me what the deal is with the SMART package manager in Mandriva 2006? For something advertised as one of the major new features of this version, I was surprised that it was not installed by default. I detest the current gui for rpmdrake, and was excited to hear that they were using a new package manager for this release. After finally discovering that it was not already installed, i installed it using rpmdrake...I got no entry for it on my menu, so i started it with smart --gui at the command line...which opened up the program, but when I try to update the channels, it gives me an error that says "can't update channels in readonly mode." read only mode? I also found it odd that I couldn't find any documentation on the software...I'm not even sure what it wants for "channels"...are they just rpm repo's, or something special? Any help here would be appreciated...

Smart is not the default package management tool because it is still under heavy development, so you should expect to have some problems.

you say you cant find any documentation for smart, yet its on the smart homepage. i have written 2 of the howtos. http://labix.org/smart

the reason you cant do anything is cause your running as user and not as root. kdesu smart --gui will do the trick.
