if you're using kde, you can turn it off/on in kontrol center->power control->display power control. also, some other areas to check..........
look in mandrake control center->system->services & see if you have apm or acpi running &/or set to start at boot. they are different power savings apps & are known to be buggy at times.
finally, if you still have problems, check in your bios for any power saving feature & shut it off there.
i had a similar problem back in MDK9.0. it turned out it was my bios power saving settings conflicting with the KDE power savings. i now have the bios power savings turned off, no apm or acpi, & use the power controls in kde's kontrol center & have no problems. the thing to remember is, if you want to use a power savings feature, use only one, not a combo of them, & use the Linux power savings tools as opposed to bios ones.
