swsusp2 freezes when restoring

I'm having a problem with swsusp2. It saves and shuts down OK then I start the computer back up and the progress bar gets to the end but then the screen gets messed up (it turns into a bunch of lines...) and it just freezes there.
Does anyone know how to fix it?

To anyone else reading this, swsusp2 is Software Suspend 2 - like Windows hibernate, but for Linux.

Questions:
What is your hardware?
Is it a pc or a laptop?
Which kernel is on your pc/laptop?
Did you install both the kernel Patches?
Are you sure they were the correct patches for your kernel?
Did you use this how to to install the patches?

I don't know much about my hardware except for CPU, RAM, and cards... it's a desktop, HP Pavilion 505n. I know it has a Phoenix BIOS...
The kernel is 2.6.5-gentoo-r1. I used this howto which is written specifically for that kernel.

Reading through (and having a squint at the Gentoo forum link), everyone else appears to be doing this on laptops. I wonder if there is something in the kernel which is specifically for laptops which this needs. Alternatively, check out the links and posts on the video card issues. Suspend is really only useful on a laptop where you can't always guarantee that you'll have continuous mains power.
