Lightbulb MDK 9.1 Config help But Im getting there

OK things are getting better, I have finally gotten the boatlaoders for XP and Mdk 9.1 straight. My problem had been Both to work with the DDO I had but heres the twist MDK recognizes all the drive space w/out the DDO....XP is the culprit. I have been lead to believe I can remedy this with sp1 I thought I had this since I bought the comp after it had come out but well see. SO....Configuration

I am a Linux Newbie and encouraged by what I see and hear HOLY HELPFUL PEOPLE. SO I call for some.

1. Realtek 8100 etho cant configure says connection is down but it DOES see it. ?? Do I need to add the IP's or will it auto find them?

2. I found a new driver for linux and above mentioned but as Im new to this I open it and dont know how to install Ive looked everywhere but cant find anEXACT tutorial.

3. I installed WINE from Gnome but when I try to open it it says run "updateb" tried in the command line to do it but doesnt work.

ANY HELP OR ADVISE OR URLS WITH HELP would be well....helpful
THANKS EVERYONE, SO FAR I think this place is the Antithesis of MS

1) It depends. If you use DHCP, don't enter IP, but make sure DHCP option is set. If you use static IP, you need to type it.

2) When you unpack it (tar zxvf filename.tar.gz if it's a .tar.gz file), there should be INSTALL, README or any other file with instruction.

3) Run updatedb as root. When logged as a normal user run
su
(enter root password when it asks you)
updatedb
