Unhappy Mandrake 10: Sound / ALSA / OSS broken

I am using Mandrake 10.

I downloaded the latest alsa driver (1.05a) and tried to compile and install it.
Things appeared to go smoothly until I restarted.

Then I got a message saying that there are no permissions available for the sound device.
Then I think I did something pretty stupid and tried to reinstall all the ALSA rpms from my MDK 10 CD. [instead of trying to troubleshoot ...]

Now there is no error message when I start but there is no sound either. The KMix icon shows a red cross across it and when I click on it there is no mixer displayed.

Then I downloaded the 1.02c Alsa driver (that is what MDK 10 uses as default I guess) and I get the following error after I install the driver and run alsaconf:

Starting sound driver: snd-intel8x0 WARNING: Error inserting snd-mpu401-uart (/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/drivers/mpu401/snd-mpu401-uart.ko.gz): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting snd-intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Running alsamixer gives me the following output:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I am completely at a loss about which direction to take and what to do.
Look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks.

several things could be an issue here, but what i think is happening is that the kernel isn't loading the sound module for the new drivers. what you can first try to do is go to Mnadrake Control Center->hardware->hardware & see if your sound card is recognized & using the correct drivers. if not, fix that then reboot, then try sound. if that doesn't do it, try running aumix from kicker->multimedia->aumix. (if aumix isn't there, you need to install it first. use MCC->software installer or urpmi aumix. it's on the cd's) check the settings in aumix & make sure nothing is muted. aumix is the system wide sound control. kmix is just KDE specific. another place to check is in KControl Center->sound system->hardware tab. try setting it to "auto detect" if it isn't set to that already. if none of the above work, i'd use MCC->uninstall software & do a search for alsa & remove all alsa related items, then use the software installer & reinstall all alsa stuff to get back to the original version. something obviously broke when you installed the new alsa drivers &/or during the compile.
