Hauppauge TV Card, Anyone sucessfully got this to work?

Has anyone gotten this, or any TV card to work in Mandriva? I have used video4linux but yet to get it to work. The channels appear as "white noise".

We would need more information than that to be able to help you, like the model number of the card, TV standard in use/country you are in, the part of the dmesg command where the card gets detected, program used to view the signal, how the card is connected to the signal and the output of the lspci command... Get back to us with these plus other details to helps us get a feel for the setup you have and hopefully someone has used the card in Linux here. Also using http://www.google.com/linux putting in the make model of the card can usually find some information to help you along getting it going.

I was more just curious if anyone has gotten any model to work, Its a WinTV card, not sure of the model I have, but if anyone has gotten one to work sucessfully I can just go grab that one. But my TV standard is NTSC, and I have used many programs, so the question was more formed as well to find out what has been known to work.

Hauppauge is a popular brand that many people use successfully if you can give us the exact model then I imagine all it will be is a matter of passing the proper options to the module when it loads. In my experience with the three tv cards I have used every one of them defaults to a PAL tuner so it is necessary to use options to have it load right with a NTSC tuner.

I use Hauppauge without problems with kdetv

I have used Hauppauge okay with Mandrake 9.x, Mandriva 2006 and now 2007. I think mine is a WinTV Theatre PCI card from a few years back with I think the bt878 chipset (but I am at work at the moment and cannot check). When setting up you will need to know the chipset - but that's true for Microsoft too I seem to remember - stopped using them some years back now!
It works fine and is easy to install and setup. The only issue is under the kdetv settings for audio, I change the audio module from ALSA to OSS. But for all I know this is peculiar to my using a Creative Audigy 2 soundcard. I haven't upgraded to any of the newer tv cards (no reason to do so) so as previous responders have said, the model you get may be important. But the tv card has always been the easiest periferal to set up.
But I would strongly recommend that you use kdetv as I know that it works (Idid use something else with earlier Mandrke distros but forget what now, and I have tried some of the newer video players and encountered difficulty.

Mine worked straight from the beggining with kdeTV, on mandriva powerpack.

I have the Hauppauge WinTV/Radio, which is about 5 yrs old but runs really smoothly.

I'd suggest you try the kdeTV, easy and working...

White Noise? Is there a selection of broadcast system (PAL, NTSC etc.)?

Alright looks like there are six different cards in a 2.6.20 kernel with the first two being the likely choices.

Code:
>$ grep -i wintv /usr/src/linux-2.6.20/Documentation/video4linux/CARDLIST.cx88
  1 -> Hauppauge WinTV 34xxx models                        [0070:3400,0070:3401]
 24 -> Hauppauge WinTV 28xxx (Roslyn) models               [0070:2801]
 40 -> Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1100 DVB-T/Hybrid                [0070:9400,0070:9402]
 41 -> Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1100 DVB-T/Hybrid (Low Profile)  [0070:9800,0070:9802]
 53 -> Hauppauge WinTV-HVR3000 TriMode Analog/DVB-S/DVB-T  [0070:1404,0070:1400,0070:1401,0070:1402]
 56 -> Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1300 DVB-T/Hybrid MPEG Encoder   [0070:9600,0070:9601,0070:9602]
Look at the output of the dmesg command for similar to this.

Code:
cx2388x v4l2 driver version 0.0.6 loaded
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0a.0[A] -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
CORE cx88[0]: subsystem: 0000:0000, board: MSI TV-@nywhere [card=13,insmod option]
TV tuner 33 at 0x1fe, Radio tuner -1 at 0x1fe
tveeprom 1-0050: Huh, no eeprom present (err=-121)?
cx88[0]/0: found at 0000:00:0a.0, rev: 3, irq: 18, latency: 32, mmio: 0xfa000000
tuner 1-0060: Chip ID is not zero. It is not a TEA5767
tuner 1-0060: chip found @ 0xc0 (cx88[0])
tuner 1-0060: microtune: companycode=4d54 part=04 rev=04
tuner 1-0060: microtune MT2032 found, OK
tuner 1-0060: microtune: companycode=4d54 part=04 rev=04
tuner 1-0060: microtune MT2032 found, OK
cx88[0]/0: registered device video0 [v4l2]
cx88[0]/0: registered device vbi0
To see how it gets detected you will want to use modprobe -r cx88xx and modprobe -r tuner to remove both modules then hopefully it told which card number it is in the output like above otherwise it is trial and error on the loading. What you need to do is modprobe cx88xx card=?? tuner=?? then try to see if you get a signal, the card= should be either 1 or 24 and the tuner= could be any of the ones below just keep trying the different combinations or you can if possible look on the card to see the tuner name on the chip if not successful then use the modprobe -r commands and move on to next combination.

Code:
>$ grep -i ntsc /usr/src/linux-2.6.20/Documentation/video4linux/CARDLIST.tuner
tuner=2 - Philips NTSC (FI1236,FM1236 and compatibles)
tuner=6 - Temic NTSC (4032 FY5)
tuner=8 - Temic NTSC (4036 FY5)
tuner=17 - Philips NTSC_M (MK2)
tuner=21 - Temic NTSC (4039 FR5)
tuner=27 - LG NTSC+FM (TPI8NSR01F)
tuner=31 - SHARP NTSC_JP (2U5JF5540)
tuner=36 - Temic NTSC (4136 FY5)
tuner=39 - LG NTSC (newer TAPC series)
tuner=42 - Philips 1236D ATSC/NTSC dual in
tuner=43 - Philips NTSC MK3 (FM1236MK3 or FM1236/F)
tuner=47 - LG NTSC (TAPE series)
tuner=49 - Microtune 4042 FI5 ATSC/NTSC dual in
tuner=52 - Thomson DTT 7610 (ATSC/NTSC)
tuner=60 - Thomson DTT 761X (ATSC/NTSC)
tuner=68 - Philips TUV1236D ATSC/NTSC dual in

Now once you find the proper combination you can put similar to what I have in your /etc/modules.conf file to have the proper options used on each boot when the module gets loaded.

Code:
options cx88xx card=13 tuner=33

I have been using Hauppauge 250mce on both Mandriva 10.1 and 2006 (32 bit version) with mythtv.

Just a couple of things to check:
Do you have the correct drivers and are they installed in the correct directory? Mandriva already comes with ivtv drivers, but I don't think they work. I downloaded the latest version from their website. For some reasons the new drivers had to be installed in a different directory than the default one for it to work. I am not sure if it was mythtv that requested this thouhg (it's been a long time since I did it).

Is the channel on the card set correctly? If you are using an antenna it should be bovious. If you use a STB you need to check what channel you need to set. I have a Dish Network and using the second tuner of the box. It took me a while to figure out that it had to be set to channel 73 (although this was in the manual....).

Hi,

I've successfully gotten 2 pvr-150 working with Mandrive 2006. I'm using version 0.4.9 of the ivtv drivers. Before I compiled the drivers, I removed the version that was already bundled with the kernel. Conflicts will definately cause problems. I'm also using all this with mythtv version 20 and have had no problems at all. Please post again if you are still have problems.

Question Can't get it working with 2007.1

As I posted earlier, I have successfully used kdetv with Mandriva until now.
But now I have updated to Mandriva Free 2007.1 Spring.
I cannot get to the scanning screen - something to do with VBI Decoder.
I tried swapping to xawtv or motv but that just gave rise to other problems.

UPDATE:

Many thanks to dswdad for this simple solution.

What I found is that you must have Video4Linux and ONLY Video4Linux checked in the video driver section of the KDETV setup. I had Vdeo4Linux2 and some other VideoPlugin checked as well. Once I unchecked those 2, it worked fine.

Worked for me too!

Thought I'd post the solution for anyone else with the same problem.

Thank you to all those that read my post.
