Ok, I have managed to get a pretty good, multimedia Slackware system up so far. I have managed to get almost everything working by simply reading man pages and lots of googling. It has been at times frustrating, but at the same time rewarding.
I am stumped though with this F** TV tuner card problem. I have recompiled to kernel 2.6.19, and it is my understanding that this kernel has support for these types of cards built in, as I couldn't find any reference to bttv or other relevant modules in xconfig.
My card seems to be detected. lspci yields:

I have compiled and am using tvtime, and get the error that no such device exists at /dev/video0

You probably need to enable some options before xconfig mentions bttv. I use make menuconfig myself, (sorry if there's some difference with xconfig) but you need to look at the options under

Scroll down that dvb menu and read all the help text for anything that looks relevant. I don't have the same card as you so I don't know what you need to enable, but it should be possible to get it to work

Also with the three tv cards I have used under linux every one needed to have an option passed when loading the module to tell it to use the nstc tv standard instead of the default pal they seem to like using. Can you show us the part of the dmesg output where the card gets detected?
I think I may have found the relevant fields in xconfig... Should I enable these as modules or as "yes". Isn't the point of compiling something as a module to minimize the kernel size and have the extra functionality only available when needed?
If so, then it would make sense to NOT compile as module for something like a TV tuner card that will be used quite frequently, correct?
Also, dmesg does not appear to mention anything about my card:

Compile the bt848 as a module so you will be able to pass a parameter when you modprobe it and most likely you will need too pass it something as I said before not one of my cards ever got detected as anything but a pal card where we need ntsc.

I recompiled to kernel 2.6.19, using a config file from one of the Slackware mirrors (with some adjustments for my hardware of course). Everything works fine, my Hauppauge TV Tuner card was detected automagically, and all relevant modules were loaded at startup.
The problem was caused by of my lack of experience in Linux and compiling the kernel. Thanks all.

Good to hear you have it working could you post the part of the dmesg output where the card get detected and the modules that were loaded so someone searching in the future will get a god idea of what is needed. Thanks.
