External Modem / PPP Problems.
Mandrake 10.0 Community.
I have an external modem that works well under Linux.
If I use kppp, I get connected fine.
Problem - none of my web-browsers or my kmail program can use the connection. I get unknown host messages.
ifconfig tells me the ppp0 interface is up but if I go into the MCC to set up a modem connection, it fails.
Did you set up DNS properly?
Try 'ping www.google.com' and 'ping 64.233.161.99'. If the first doesn't work, and the second does, you will need to setup the DNS. You will probably need the DNS addresses of your ISP. Then you can put them into KPPP.
I have the same problem (with mdk 10), but when I create a new connection in MCC (after closing the non-working one) by browsers and e-mail clients work well. Of course it is not very efficient to open the MCC and create a new connection each time I want to reach the internet. So I am also interested in a clean solution to this problem.
(This problem appeared after I upgraded from mdk 9.1 to mdk 10.)

I had the same problem but i found out that it was ethernet to blame.
Ethernet was up and all the applications was not paying attention to the modem.
If you have ethernet try (as root) ifdown eth0 or ifconfig eth0 10.10.1.1 netmask 255.255.0.0 .
