external modem problems fedora core 4

After updating linux kernel from 2.6.12 -> 2.6.13 external modem ceases to be detected. Kppp gives message "modem not detected" under same configuration as with previous kernel, and booting up with older kernel does work. The only software change was this kernel update (via "yum update kernel"). I'm not even able to send modem commands.

The modem is a diamond max supraExpress 56e pro external serial modem. (As a curiosity under winXP SP2 modem has also ceased to be detected...)

if you use any driver for modem that will be not compatable with the new kernel.
