i am very much of a newbie to linux. i installed mandrake 9.1 last week but i can't figure out how to get my browsers to connect to my dsl line. i've tried konqueror and mozilla, neither finds the dsl connection. obviously i am missing something.
i don't know anything about the connection wizard. that sounds like what i would do if this were windows, but i just started linux.
i have an hp p4 1.8. the net card is built in. my dsl modem came from sbc, my internet provider. it attaches to the net card by the large phone-type wire that ethernet uses.
FYI that phone type wire is called Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and comes it different catagories as CAT3. CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6.
It consists of 4 two wire pairs that are twisted together. Only two pairs are used.
The difference between them is how fast you can transmit a signal. CAT3 is the slowest, 10mb and mostly used for phone wire these days. CAT6 is the fastest @ 1000mb
You shouldn't have any problems connecting unless your network card is unsupported.
I've had a similar problem. I have a Marconi DSL box and I access it from eth0 (my ethernet card is properly configured). I've tried using the wizard in the control centre but it doesn't give me the option of DSL (options are modem, winmodem, isdn, adsl and lan). I've tried setting up using the ADSL option, but it didn't ask me for a number to dial. In windows 2k, I use a normal modem connection with RASPPPoe because win2k doesn't support DSL. Is there a similar solution for Mandrake?
Try this, its worked for everyone I've spoken to. I originally found the advice within these forums.
Here's how I got my DSL connection up in Mandrake 9.1:
I used the Mandrake Control Center, went through "Network and Internet", then "DrakConnect". I then used to wizard to get through the setup. It had the LAN box checked by default. I unchecked it, and chose ADSL. Then, PPOE for the connection method (this may vary by provider). Then, I typed verizon.net in the provider spot, my username and password in their respective spaces, then I let it test my connection. I got an error saying it could not connect and I chose "finish". Right after that, I hit the connect button and it connected. All is good. I also chose the "connect at boot" option so my connection is started at every boot.
