You probably have a KDE service trying to run at startup which is timing out because one of the services it depends upon is also not starting at boot.

When this happens [CTRL][ALT][F1] and log in as root on the text console.

If you are not at the login prompt when you do this, then wait and reboot the system.

Perform an interactive startup (SHIFT - I at initialization)... and manually step through each service. However SKIP the "DM" (display manager) service, and continue on until you find the one that is taking forever.

Then disable it with

chkconfig --del NAMEOFSERVICE

thnx but i would like if there is nothing like in windows where u can list all the programs which run at the start up and delete the one u dun want to run at start up.
and also after i login there is no LED emitting from the hard dik indicating that it's doing something ,it just like that and when the kde splash is about to show then the LEd start to wink to show that there is some processes on .

There certainly IS, in MCC under SERVICES.

However you are best off, doing what I stated to find out which one is the offending service.

Exactly. It something is waiting upon something else. Waiting being the operative phrase here.

It's not loading from the drive, it's just awaiting a timeout to occur.

i did what u told and skype the dm .so i got the login in text mode i enter my account details then the system just stay just after i enter my password with no response .so after 10mn the LED start emitting and it has shown the login GUi screen for me to enter my login details .when i enter the kde just come right after .
so the difference here is that when i use interactive mode and skype the dm the 10mn standby was before the loginGUi screen but with normal booting it's after the login GUi screen but before the kde splash screen .
so i dun know what to do stop waiting for 10mn b4 using my PC

No, you DID NOT, stop the DM service as I indicated.

Try again with the INTERACTIVE startup and STOP the DM service when it asks you if you wish to start it.

Then see what happens when you attempt to log in.

However I'll bet the problem is that you installed NIS and it's trying to contact a non-existent server for authentication.

i try again the iteractive booting then at the dm i say no for starting the dm .then it took me to the textmode login ,i enter my login details , the cursor just went to the next line and stay there for 10mn then it wrote" Last login [ time ......]
then show the command prompt then start the dm b4 i can login in the kde
so still i didn't see anything

also i saw a nis folder in /var/nis but there is nothing in the folder, i dun know what that nis is doing .

Ah, now we are getting much closer to the mark.

When you set up Linux you probably told it to use network authentication (NIS) instead of "local files".

It's trying to find a NIS server on your local network to authenticate against.

When it finally times out, you get a local login, but this takes a while.

You could try removing all NIS modules and programs via the "rpm -e" command or re-install Mandrake this time changing the authentication type.

thnx for the reply ,but reinstalling is not an option for me bcos i'm tired of doing it since two weeks that i first installed mandrake on my system ,i've been installing and reinstalling more than 7 times to get a stable mandrake 10.1 official running with kernel 2.6.8 and i can use all my softwares like amsn ,yahoo messenger, skype and players, amarok, etc ..(i use to take 1day b4 i can get all the updates and softwares installations , bcos upgrading from 10.0 powerpack)
so about the nic modules, i think for the installation i choose local files, there is nothing in the nic folder so i dun know what to uninstall and the command u provided ,i only type that command alone or what

Excellent.

It wasn't NIS then, but I should have remembered that CUPS was also problematic on systems that did not have a local DNS.
