adsl connection problems

Hello,

I have been having problems with my home Mandrake linux machine (I have Mandrake 10 Community installed at work as well). My internet connect just won't work. I used adsl-setup to enter in my password and username and all that stuff. Then I ran adsl-start and it started correctly....or it gave no errors anyway. But when I try to visit a web site in the browser it won't work! The status of adsl says that I am connected but I can surf the web. I also tried ping www.google.ca and it returns unable to find host or locate host or something like that. The same thing happens in the browser. Can't resolve host or can't find host (I forget right now). I tried restarting the machine because I set it up so that the adsl starts on start up. I also made sure I was in text mode for boot up so I could see if it started. And it returned OK for the starting of my pp0e connection.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks.

Maybe your MTU / MRU values are incorrect; at least that's a relatively common problem here in Germany. Maybe you should try to find a website for ADSL and Linux in Canda, where they can tell you the correct values and how to set them.

What are MTU / MRU values?

Yeah, I will look for a website on ADSL on Linux in Canada. The thing is, I had it working on Red Hat 8 and 9 a few months ago. Does anyone out there use Mandrake with Sympatic in Ontario Canada?

Thanks for the help

I'm not sure whether that is any help but you could try contacting the people at http://forum.eagle-usb.org/viewforum.php?f=7 - they provide an ADSL driver for a specific modem, but they probably know a lot about setting the MTU / MRU values for other systems. Then there's a thread about it in the equivalent German forum which is mostly in English and might help, too: http://atar215-linux.sourceforge.net...hlight=mtu+mru

I'm not sure whether the mentioned file mpoa.c exists in your setup, but if it does it might contain a wrong value for mtu or mru. The correct values for you depend on your dsl provider AFAIK, so I suppose you'll have to google for the info.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'm not sure I understand it completely myself

If you have an external modem make sure that eth0 is not being activated at boot up. Look at the output of ifconfig for eth0. This happened on one of my PCs and once I stopped pppoe, deactivated eth0 and restarted pppoe I could reach the internet.

No problem....every little bit helps

I think that the eth0 tries to activate on boot up but I think it fails...but I will have to confirm that. BTW, how do I deactivate the eth0.....I am sure I could find it if I looked hard enough, but since I have you here .

Thanks

run drakconf, Network & Internet/Manage Connections, select eth0, click on Options, deselct Start at boot.

This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about TCP/IP but MTU/MRU stand for Maximum Transmision Unit/Maximum Receive Unit. They control the maximum size of the datagrams that can be transmitted/received as the names suggest.

hi, i'm having the exact same problem here with sympatico in mississauga. were you able to solve your problem? i am able to connect and get an ip address, but i cannot ping anything or connect. i've checked the nameservers, and they seem correct. the thing is, i cannot even connect using ip addresses, so it must be a connection issue, as opposed to a nameserver issue. is there anything else that anyone can suggest? how exactly would i change mtu/mru values?

I have not looked at my Mandrake 10 homemachine in a while. I use Mandrake everyday at work but I haven't had time to look at the problem at home in a while. Maybe if I get some time this weekend I will look at it. If I find anything out I will let you know.

since nobody mentioned this yet............

do any of you have a firewall running, by any chance? if so, do you have it set up properly? in terminal as root, type............ service shorewall status (hit enter) to check firewall status. if it shows as running, type........... service shorewall stop (hit enter) to stop it & then try the internet. if that solves it, then post back if you need help with properly setting up shorewall.

another question............ did any of you do an upgrade from 9.2? if so, i had a similar issue with my ADSL connection when i upgraded. i couldn't make a connection without running DrakeConnect each time first after a reboot/restart. the only way i manged to solve it was upgrading the upgrade & setting my internet connection config from the final settings screen during the install. after that i never had a problem.

one final thought.............. have you gotten all the updates? there may be something in one of the updates that might fix the problem.
