WPC11 V4 with Fedora Core4. Dead End

I think I have read everything there is on this problem the last few days. The closest I have come is using NDISWRAPPER. That seems to work ok up to the point of Activating. By pure accident, I got it to work only one time.

I think if I knew how to get around the 4k Stacks issue in Fedora Core 4 and still be able to compile and install NDISWRAPPER, it would work. Is there a step by step of how to get the kernel to use 8k or 16 k stacks so that NDISWRAPPER will work with the WPC11v4 on FC4? Linuxant.com has a driver available, but then there is no source for that kernal which kills the NDISWRAPPER install.

Apparently there are solutions to make the WPC11 v4 work on other distributions, and for Fedora 2.4 kernels, but not for FC 2.6 kernels which use 4k stacks and remove the 8k and 16 k options from kernel config. I am not versed enough to figure out all the little details on how to overcome this roadblock. Can anybody help??

Thx. Bill

c'mon, we can do it

Hey Bill.

I just loaded FC4 on two Dell Inspiron 1100's. One of them has Dell's built in wireless adapter, the other will be using the same adapter your fighting with right now. Actually, I've got the WPC11 v.4, a WPC54G v. 2 and a D-Link G630.

I decided to concentrate on the Dell without the built in Wi-Fi adapter, and after a bit of reading decided the WPC11 v. 4 would be best. After all, there is a linux driver for this adapter under FC3 or so it would seem.

Apparently FC3 was a different animal with the stack size difference and that driver won't work with FC4.

So here's where I'm at: when I put the WPC11 in the slot and run lspci I have the following:

02:04.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1510 PC card Cardbus Controller
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8180L 802.11b MAC (rev 20)

So FC4 definitely sees the adapter, although that's about as much as it does. So more reading led me to look into using NDISWRAPPER or DriverLoader. DriverLoader has a cost but a lot of people seem to swear by it. So I went and read their site, and it sounded like I would have to install a 16k stack capable kernel which they have a link to, and then use DriverLoader. I wrote their support and told them what gear I was wanting to use with FC4 to make sure it would work. They replied that it would indeed work, and without making any change to the kernel.

I haven't tried it yet, because I haven't checked out NDISWRAPPER yet. I'm guessing the two products are similiar in what they do, allowing ms drivers...

I know I haven't given a solution, but let's work on this and I think we can get it working.

Hi,

Well I followed the accepted dictates for ndiswrapper, and everything is fine, up until clicking activate within the FC4 internet config thing. There it dies. I tried using the 16k kernel for the driverloader, because it should solve the problem with ndisdriver as well. Problem is, without the source for the 16k kernel, the ndiswrapper install fails, because it can't find the info from the kernel source that it needs.

I am thinking if we could figure out how to get the FC4 kernal configured to 16 k stacks (whatever that means, really, and how to do it), then the ndiswrapper solution would work like it does in the other distributions. I have gotten everything to look fine with ndiswrapper, except to actually connect!!

Short of this, I am wanting to buy a cardbus wireless nic that will install with FC4 straight away. Of course, nobody will say they know of such a device that will do that.
