Dead end with Linksys WPC54G

Hiya,
Im using Red Hat Fedora Core 4, just switched over from Windows XP. Ive managed to install a lot of things so far, but ive come to a dead end with my wireless access card. Ive searched several forums for answers but i cant find one.

Ive installed ndiswrapper successfully, installed the drivers that my card needs and ndiswrapper returns "driver present, hardware present" when i issue /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper.
I issued /sbin/modprobe ndiswrapper and got no errors, /etc/modprobe.conf has been updated to reflect the wlan card.

Ive run through the network devices wizard, the card was picked up (ndiswrapper(wlan0)) and i entered the SSID, WPA key, IP, Gateway, Subnet mask and Channel without any problems.

I then ran Kwifimanager to see if it could pick up my wireless access point. When i pressed scan for networks it saw the network name, but wouldnt let me select it.

I then issued /sbin/ifup wlan0 and it returned this error:

Error : unrecognised wireless request "Mb/s"
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument

When i issue /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 i get this:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSIDff/any Nickname:"Adam_Laptop"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power:25 dBm
RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr=2346 B
Power Managementff
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beaco

I looks like the wlan isnt reading the SSID i have set, the wireless.log file constantly shows trying to access network "any" (the same name as shown in Kwifimanager when looking for my access point).

I would really appreciate if somebody could point me in the right direction, i want the feeling of accomplishment when my wireless LAN is setup and working in linux, Thanks

Do you use 'iwconfig' to set essid?

It should be
Code:
iwconfig wlan0 essid THE_ESSID
You also don't seem to have set a WEP key.

Thanks for your reply Xavier, I tried running that command as root but it the SSID isnt being remembered. I issued "/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 essid adam", didnt receive any errors, then issued "/sbin/iwconfig wlan0" and the SSID had reverted back to "off/any"... Have you got any ideas why? Also, could you tell me what parameter to use to set a WEP key? Thank you,

I know this post is a week old but I'm having the same problem now. Has anyone found the solution?

I have set the WEP key with:
iwconfig wlan0 key restricted xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

That went fine but I still get "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument"

Everything else seems to be working fine except for that error which is preventing me from accessing the internet. I installed ndiswrapper, loaded the driver, so driver and hardware is present. My network is visible when scanned for but I'm going crazy because I can't connect to it!

Anyone?!

According to the Installation Wiki, you sometimes have to run "iwconfig wlan0 commit" a few times to get it to take. Whenever I have encountered the error message when setting the essid, I usually rerun that line until the error stops appearing. Then I continue with the rest of the commands.
