ndiswrapper and realtek 8180 help

Hi all,

Well, so heres the story. I installed mandrake 10.0 recently and i have a dlink dwl-520. So I used ndiswrapper 0.11 along with rtl8180 v1.5. Followed all the directions and everything went fine. I was able to set the essid using iwconfig and get an IP address from the router. I then setup ip masq on it. Everything is going great, working like a charm. So now I figure, i'd like to move my box someplace else so it doesn't take up any space on my desk. I move it about 3 feet away from its original location and power it back up. It no longer has an ip address and isn't connected to any AP. I try doing iwconfig wlan0 essid "ap" but it still displays "ESSIDff/any". I cannot seem to get the card to connect to any AP anymore and I know signal strength is fine because its all in the same room.

What would cause iwconfig to no be able to set the essid on the card? I also tried setting the mode to managed and that still doens't work. Any other suggestions on what I should check?

Thanks,
Toan

What version of the XP driver are you using? I've been beating my head against any wall nearby trying to get my 8180 based card to work. I was trying to use ndiswrapper but I went to the linuxant driverloader program. Nothing worked, until I checked the Realtek site.
Realtek just released new drivers:

ftp://152.104.125.40/cn/wlan/rtl8180...-8180(173).zip

When I downloaded this everything worked perfect.

Lightbulb That only works w/kernel 2.4.20 - v1.5

Go to realteks website and download this file: setup for 8190.
Once unpacked, go into file called WINXP.
This will have all 3 files you need for ndiswrapper.

www.realtek.com.tw

Click on Downloads at top, then in search type 8180 to locate files.

Got this to work for SuSE 9.0

Try using ndiswrapper .9. Then grab the newest winxp driver from realtek stick them in your home dir. Type in ndiswrapper -i whatever.inf . Then go into your /sbin/ and type in modprobe ndiswrapper . Then go into /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper -m . That will set up your card as a device then run the net config and you should be all set. If you use mandrake update you maybe have to repeart the process but its pretty simple. Oh also if you do have to repeat the process youll have to first issue the command ndiswrapper -l . That will tell you what it named the driver file. Then type in ndiswrapper -e whatever.inf .Then repeat the steps above. It works great for me. Hell the windows driver works better in linux than windows. In windows I constantly have to keep clicking repair connection. In linux its strong the whole time.
Good luck!
