XFT anti-aliased font ??? whazzat?


while going through the INSTALL file for fox tool-kit i can across this ..

XFT is a screen specification


VGA/SVGA/XFT/etc. etc.

don't think so

XFT stands for X Free Type
it's just a library that provides an extension to the old 1987 X11 fonts system
without technical specifics it basically futzes around with the fonts edges so they don't look so horrible.
was done by XFree project and "borrowed" by other now suddenly more polically correct X implementations.

old unix/linux X was without a doubt some of the ugliest fonts you ever saw.

Bingo. Aliasing is the effect you get when you draw a line on a screen that isn't either vertical or horizontal. It's the rough edges you get as you move from one column or row of pixels to the next. Anti-aliasing is a sort of blurring of the edges so they look nice and soft
