Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

The first thing you should know is that Linux is not Windows and there are things you need to be aware of. Once you've got the differences covered, that is, understanding that there are differences, go over to Distrowatch.com, download some of the distros in the Top 10 list for example and try them out in LiveCD/DVD version so that they don't affect your installed OS. Once you find a distro that detects your hardware correctly, install it alongside and start learning/using. Linux is all about hands-on trial and error. You learn by using it. Have fun with Linux.

Kind regards,

Eric

About dot com has a good intro for persons new to Linux. It's oriented to Ubuntu, but it's full of good info:

I second the suggestion of EricTRA. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Mepis live CDs should all work for most reasonably recent hardware, and should be friendly to the Linux newcomer.
