vsftpd 500 OOPS: cannot change directory

i have a simple setup i have a user who's home dir is /var/www/ i want to login using ftp to this user and edit my web pages and stuff but when i login i get this:
Code:
220 Welcome to blah FTP service.

530 Please login with USER and PASS.
USER webftp
331 Please specify the password.
PASS xxxxxxx
500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/var/www
500 OOPS: child died
this is the output of ls -l /var/www
Code:
drwxr-xr-x  2 webftp webftp 4096 Nov 11  2007 cgi-bin
drwxr-xr-x  3 webftp webftp 4096 May 17 11:39 error
drwxr-xr-x  4 webftp webftp 4096 May 18 13:16 html
drwxr-xr-x  3 webftp webftp 4096 May 17 11:52 icons
drwxr-xr-x 14 webftp webftp 4096 May 17 11:52 manual
drwxr-xr-x  2 webftp webftp 4096 May 17 14:03 usage
to me that shows webftp has full ownership of /var/www/ this has me beat any ideas welcome.
i can use this account to login normally with no problems.

Scott.

The contents of /var/www are owned by webftp, who owns 'www' under /var?
Need to see the vsftpd.conf file to provide a more definitive answer.

Here's my vsftpd config file i haven't changed much
Code:
anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES
local_umask=777
dirmessage_enable=YES
xferlog_enable=YES
connect_from_port_20=YES
xferlog_std_format=YES
ftpd_banner=Welcome to blah FTP service.
listen=YES
pam_service_name=vsftpd
tcp_wrappers=YES
i did a ls -l on /var and got this for www
Code:
drwxrwxrwx  8 webftp webftp 4096 May 17 13:17 www
so it is owned by webftp

audio not heard

Hello, sorry about the lack of better thread title. All daemons such as Amorak, Audacious, K3b are configured on my Slackware. My flac audio files are fine and play in both services. Similarly my cd rom drive plays fine when logged in as root ( there are some permission issues when logged in as user ).

There definitely no mute on the speaker icon showing in the task bar. Yet, I don't hear anything when the media is playing.

There does't seem to be any central control utility for audio. Can anyone throw some light on this.

Many thanks in advance

I am using Slackware 12
