Question Ubuntu rear pannel audio problems.

Please help, I have a computer with windows and ubuntu and I have tried but I cant get the audio to work. I am using the green jack on the back and it's connected to my monitor and it still won't work, any solutions? Thanks.

You didn't mention, so does the audio work in Windows?

I assume you mean you have speakers plugged into the green jack in the sound card. Here are some suggestions for getting started on troubleshooting:

1. Check the software volume control to verify the speakers aren't muted.

2. Check any hardware volume controls to verify they are turned up.

3. If you have other output jacks, start something playing and plug into each one in turn (yes, I know it's normally the green jack, but thorough troubleshooting starts off with ruling out obvious alternatives).

Also, run the lspci command (it stands for LiSt PCI devices) in a terminal; the sound card should be identified in the output. Let us know what kind of sound card you have. (It would be best if you posted the relevant output of lspci to the forum, surrounding it in "code" tags, which become available when you click "Go Advanced" at the bottom of the Quick Reply window.)

The sound doesn't work in windows and all volume is topped out and there is no card, it comes straight from the mother board however, I will try some of the other jacks when I get home. Thanks.

If it doesn't work in Windows either, it's likely hardware.

In addition to trying the other jacks, also consider trying other speakers and cables.

When worse has come to worse, I've jacked a known-good ("known-good" is the key; you must use good hardware to test for broken hardware) headset into the speaker jacks just for testing purposes.
