Unhappy teTex with lyx permissions error?

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to get a thesis written and would like to set up Lyx to do it. Lyx requires teTex and I've already installed both on my ThinkPad T20 running RedHat 9.

The problem is that Lyx won't do dvi and pdf conversion unless I invoke it as root. I smell a permission problem here, but the underlying teTex bin files such as xdvi that Lyx should use to supoort this functionality are executable for all users as are the directories in which they lie.

My guess is that there must be an intermediary file that gets called between telling Lyx to make the conversion and the running of the xdvi binary and that this file has permissions that are too constrictive, but it's not clear to me which one it is.

Can somebody help me find the needle in the haystack here?

Thanks for lis-nin.
