start postgresql server

I installed PostgreSQL 9.1 on Kubuntu 11.10. It has been 2-3 years since my last installation. I am having trouble finding the documentation I need. There is no manual in the version I have. Also I don't know how to set up users since I don't understand how to work with the new cetegory 'role.'
