ssh android to debian tutorial or howto needed

Hi guys,
I'm trying to connect my android, using DroidSCP, to my laptop at home. However, I never tried ssh.ing myself to anything before so I may need help. I'm looking for a howto, tutorial or anything that can help me out with this. There are several of them available, but I most of them didn't work or aren't directly related to my issues: My dormitory has its own network (accessible directly trough either static IP and domain), but the laptop is connected trough my router. How will this affect ssh connection? Do I need to switch it to gateway or router mode? Or should it be directly plugged to dormitory network?

I'd recommend ConnectBot as an Android SSH client. Also, the default virtual keyboard is awful for this purpose. I recommend Hacker's Keyboard, as it provides cntrl, esc, arrows, etc., in a directly accessible manner.

As far as your router, you will need to forward port 22 to your statically addressed Debian machine. You can't use DHCP to get a dynamically assigned IP addressed and be a server (unless your router supports pseudo-static addressing or similar capability). On your Debian, you will need to open the firewall to port 22, and start an ssh server.

That should do it.

ssh android to debian

To this regard, it would be useful to know whether connectBot (like other free software from google) can be installed on cheap tablets (A13 Cortex) which do not have the Google Market.

The same for your suggested Hacker's keyboard (non free?), although, as far as I could see, it lacks important keys, such as { } and < >, for the little programming that one would like to do with a tablet.

As to the router (my own is a Zyxel), where all my servers are passwordless ssh connected (via a cable, however ther is wifi too from the router) through the IP assigned by the router, can the connectBot tablet join the team and allow scp file trasfer, or it will disrupt the game? I must confess that I did not consider - or was not able to consider - your recommendations to this regard. Fundamentally, I don't understand connectBot: is that an ssh emulator, allowing to create the keys for the tablet and go passwordless to linux boxes? I never had a tablet at hand.

If not, what about deleting the firmware and installing a tablet-devised minimal linux for ssh? My aim (common to most scientific labs) is to have a cheap, MOVABLE connection to internet, downloading e-mail and literature and pass that to the server. Of couse, the intallation of linux should still permit "navigation" through the web with the tablet (i.e., without a mouse).

Should that not work, than a minimal laptop with light linux would be a better choice. When compared to Google Market-enablet tablets, a laptop to this regard may even be cheaper, avoiding to become entrapped in google market affairs. The drawback is lack of comfort in going around with a laptop.

thanks
