I am now a devoted fan and user of Linux having switched to it about 2 years ago from Microsoft Windows. Ever since then I have been keeping notes on what works, what doesn't, tips and tricks, and so forth to allow me to recall all the notes that are needed to run my system (Gentoo) efficiently.
But....
My notes are starting to pile up and become tougher and tougher to search through. They are currently just in text files under different categories. Such as "emerge-portage-notes.txt" and "network-notes.txt" and so forth.
Is there some kind of software under Linux that will allow me to enter my notes (even if I have to start from scratch or transfer them over one line at a time) in such a way that I can more easily search through them to see relevant sections that I am interested in?
Something that will allow me to create node notes so to speak, for example in the sense that they won't be classified into any one particular category (such as networking, portage, applications, etc..) but rather where they will just exist as independent entities that I can then search through, having my search pulling up the entire node of a note such that I can see all it's paragraphs through my search (I hope that made sense
).
I have used grep before but it's a pain in the butt to read through the cryptic lines that show up. I have to almost alwyas go out to the file that was searched through, open it up, and look to the line grep found to see the full pargraph or two that I was interested in reading.
Perhaps a Wiki set up to run off Apache behind my firewall? I don't know. I've never used a Wiki but it does seem promising. The downside is that I have to have Apache running all the time, taking up system resources, just to search through and read through my notes when and if I might want to look at them. Seems a bit much just to take notes and be able to search through them.
Any suggestions?
