Software Forum note

Could someone put up a note on the software forum asking people to do a quick search on google, and tldp before asking questions?
A lot of times many of the questions have howtos written that would answer them, at tldp.

Well not just in the Software forum, we encourage members to always search our site, other sites and google.com as much as possible but in the end, there will always be the ones that post something that either is answered elsewhere or even a few mins before in the same forum.

It is something we are fully aware of and even a warning usually won't work the majority of the time.

We are not a RTFM type site though, if your only going to post links to other sites, then well, skip the thread and move on. It is okay however to post links and give some kind of reply, in a polite manner, etc. I tend to give the short answer then links to search if necessary.

Is it possible for the system to scan the subject line when a new thread is being started and compare it with archived posts (although that may be too slow)? If it could be done, it could pop up a warning indicating that the same question has already been asked, and it would also serve to weed out double and cross postings.

Actually if you haven't noticed already, we have a new button when creating new threads that asks, "Has this been asked".

I would think and from talks with Jeremy, doing something that compares threads or the such would take up resources we can use elsewhere for now. But something like that or anything that helps cut down questions that have already been asked or if its a double post would be very nice to have.

That's good. (I rarely start threads, so I hadn't seen it.)

I've been seeing more and more double posts, so I've been thinking of ways to cut down on them. I agree, however, that we don't want to tie up otherwise-needed resources. I'll just continue to use my old friend, the emoticon.

Trust me, its always a debate to improve and cut down double posts. If you catch one and its not closed, always feel free to post it and a mod should be around once they get a chance to close it, etc. Thanks.

That button isn't enabled for everyone yet, it's still in testing We are always looking for ways to reduce double posting. As always if you have any ideas or suggestions let us know.
