screen resolution stuck at 800x600 - fedora 17 - 32 bit

fedora 3.7.9-101.fc17.i686

I know this fedora is out of support - had a newer one but had to retreat to this older version since newer one did not properly support my brother printer. Have been on this one for 1/2 year with no problem till today.

Yesterday I did an update to chrome. Chrome did not properly process certain email and friend pointed out that I had old chrome so I used yum to update it. Worked fine - chrome was great etc.

YUM pointed out that it had to change some other things to install the updated chrome. I didn't research what they were.

Last nite I shut down. This morning on restart it puts screen at 800x600 and graphical features don't allow me to change it.

I assume there is a command line utility that I could use but I don't know what it is.

POST SCRIPT FIXED

tried xrand various no help

powered off screen powered on
tried xrand -q
and it fixed itself!!?
I'll let you know if it survives a shutdown

I am also aware that yum has a roll back feature - and I may or may not have been doing the journaling to use it.

Suggestions? Specifically what command line feature lets me set resolution of screen?

Unfortunately lots of stuff important to me is on this disk. I do have a full disk backup from a few weeks ago. If necessary will revert to it and then maybe use a thumb drive to move newer material - so ll is notr lost - but above is time consuming.

Merry Christmas - a time of year to be philosophical about minor technical frustrations and remember what is really important

Then instead of using a OS that has KNOWN and now fixed security holes
-- holes that will NEVER be fixed --

how about using a STILL supported OS

I would install CentOS 6.5

i have ScientificLinux 6.4 running mostly well on a 12-13 year old computer
with an antique Nvidia Gforce2 mx 400 card

if you were using the fedora 20 google repo
you will have problems

if you MUST use a dead version of fedora
then build the opensource chromium browser from the source code

CentOS is the FREE rebuild of RedHat Enterprise Linux

it is a VERY long life distro
the major version ( 6 is current) has 7 years of support from cent

but cent only supports the current minor version
but upgrades are almost painless and major versions of programs will NEVER change over the lifetime

and if you buy the yearly support contract from redhat
RHEL6 has a 10 year lifespan

John
Is there a site somewhere that would tell me how to migrate from Fedora to CentOS?
Would I build a new disk and then migrate my home directory?
Or would I do it on a clone of my current disk using yum pointed at a different repository?

there is no real "migration"

you will need to do a clean new install

fedora is mostly Redhat's test bed and CentOS is a free clone of rhel

http://www.centos.org/
https://www.centos.org/forums/
-- the wiki --
http://wiki.centos.org/

but centos 6 is now using the redhat documentation
https://access.redhat.com/site/docum...erprise_Linux/

your brother printer should be supported in CUPS

fedora is using Gnome3 and that might cause problems with old hardware
CentOS 6.5 is using Gnome2
