Quick question on VLC "preinstalled' codecs

Basically does it come installed with all the preinstalled codecs? like avi, wmv, so on so forth?
I compiled it from source and didnt change any of the preinstalled definitions in either VLC or FFMPEG.

In my own personal experience (installed through the package manager), yes, it played anything and everything without the need for additional codecs.

This has also been my experience. I have, for example, been able to play certain filetypes (such as mp3) using vlc while a different media player (such as Totem) would ask me to install the packages when I tried playing the same file.

One of attractive points of VLC is that it comes with all the codecs, ready to use. This does, however, mean that most installs of VLC might be technically non-Free software since they are bundled with proprietary codec decoders (I am fuzzy on these details).
