Please can someone tell me of a good graphics program

Hey all,

I've been using The Gimp, and I'm sorry to say it's utter rubbish. I'd rather use tuxpaint over The Gimp anyday if it could open any file I want, rather than only open files I've already saved.

I'm sorry, but those who compare The Gimp to Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro are MAD!
I have both Photoshop and PSP, and paid a lot of money for them and I would never in a million years trade them for the likes of The Gimp.

In the end I'm using OpenOffice Draw because I'm determined to try and do all I need in Linux, but honestly, if The Gimp is the best graphics program Linux has to offer, and it doesn't even have some simple features, then I'm afraid I'll never be able to give up Windows.

What makes Tuxpaint better than The Gimp? It looks nicer, has nice sounds, and makes it very easy for drawing a straight line. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the Gimp, maybe as every Linux user raves so much about it, so it is possible, but then how the heck am I supposed to do it?

Basically I need to make a straight line, but need to make lots of them - so need something which I click, then drag and unclick and a line appears according to my width settings.

Is this possible in The Gimp? If so, how?
And if not, what is the best graphics program?

Thanks

1) Choose the pencil tool.

2) Left-click where you want the line to start.

3) Hold the 'shift' key and left-click where you want the line to end.

I can't imagine it being any easier than 1-2-3.

Tuxpaint is a better graphics program because it has nice sounds? What color is the sky on your planet?

Enjoy!

That's pretty easy, but it'd be better if more people knew about it.
The thing I like in PSP and PS is that there's a special button for it. I don't mind doing what I have to do in Gimp, but it doesn't say anywhere... that's the problem.

This method has been used in Photoshop for years.

Another option is to use the path tool. Click two points and you have a straight path, then stroke the path.

Gimp 2.04 is pretty dang nice.. I had trouble wiht 2.0 for some reason, but everything works great in 2.04. Only complaint i have is getting everything into one window instead of having scattered windows that will not minimize together..

If you're looking for a good vector illustration app, check out http://www.inkscape.org or http://www.sodipodi.com Both are great, and are quickly becoming a contender against the like of Illustrator and Freehand. Mind you, they're not perfect, but they ARE good

on a side note, i got Photoshop 7.0 to run flawlessly using the most recet version of Wine. If you still feel you gotta have it, install Wine and give it a shot.

I really like the gimp, it's a powerful program, but preferably I like Photoshop, I don't like the way gimp uses different windows, I like 1, with windows inside of it, so I use cxoffice, and photoshop 7 ,
