Playing Mp3's

Heya all, i thought id have a play with Mandrake 9.0 on my system. I installed it with KDE desktop (being the newbie i am I have no idea what the diff is between KDE & Gnome). Due to hardware problems i had to re-install it. I installed it second time with Gnome. Now when open an MP3 it doesnt do anything & i cant find an apropriate mp3 player.

Somewhere in the menus should be a sound/video/multimedia menu. Click on that and find xmms (X multimedia system). That should play MP3s for you.

You could open a terminal and type xmms. That would start it. You could also make a custom shortcut to it either on the desktop or on the panel (that way you don't have to open a terminal everytime).

Hmm...it usually doen't matter if it's in KDE or gnome. But if it doesn't work, you more than likely need to install it. It's well worth the effort as xmms is a great mp3 player.

The link below is a direct link to download it for Mandrake:

xmms for i586 machine

mpg123 works, use it at the command line, to stop it though, you have to kill the process.

or simply open the mandrake contol center and choose there the rpmdrake to add software. when it starts type in the searchfield xmms and select all of the found. that will install xmms and create an entry in multimedia/sounds

greets
