Both gimp, or more properly, 'The Gimp' and 'ImageMagick' have good screen/window capture capabilities. Both are commonly included with linux distros, or are easily obtained. There are others, as well, but those are the two I use most by far.

I recommend ImageMagick over The Gimp for this task. Gimp takes some time to fire up the GUI, with ImageMagick it's just the 'import' command, which you can easly bind to a hotkey, menu, or icon in your $FAVORITE_DESKTOP_ENVIRONMENT.

Cool. I never knew that one. I've always entered the ImageMagick GUI with 'display', and then cpatured with /File/Open/Grab. So there you go; a scriptable command-line interface, and an interactive GUI based tool all in one package. If you are going to post-process the catured image anyway, the Gimp is still a great tool.
