multiple X servers fail to start

i have been looking into a way to start a second x on vt7. after booting i startx with "startx", then switch to vt2 with "ctrl+alt+F2" and log in. i try to start another x with "X :1" and it starts, i see the nvidia splash i get a black screen with a "x" for a mouse cursor just as i do when i start the first. but it never goes any further. KDE does not load or anything, just sits on that black screen. i know it can be done, was updating a friends FC6 machine and one of the updates caused a second x to start. however after rebooting that machine could not duplicate it. i am trying to do this on slackware 11, kde 3.5.4. i have followed the suggestions of other simular threads but get the same results no matter which method used.

X :1| fluxbox -display :1&

or if I want kde:
X :1| urxvt -display :1&
and then in urxvt - #startkde&
