Hi,
Today I bought a new motherboard (ECS K7SOM) with Duron 1.3 Ghz. First I installed Win98, it ran ok and after that I tried to install Mandrake 9.0 on the same disk on a different partition. After "loading program into memory", there is a black screen on which is said (among other things) "unable to open /proc/bus/pci/devices". This screen dissapears very quickly and after choosing the language the installation hangs on detecting the harddisk.
With this CD I already installed Mandrake several times on other desktops.
What can be the problem?
check this website out dated march 12 2002, and scroll towards the bottom of the page. It may not explain your problem in detail but it will give an indication as to why you have the problem your having. when planning on running linux do your hardware homework, a lesson that took me awhile to learn. here explains your chipset features for your main board http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7som.html
I looked over the mdk9 errata site for an answer to your problem and didnt see anything listed. I also looked for your hardware under the supported hardware list and it wasnt there as supportted or unsupported. I believe I made the correct assumption that it id indeed the chipset that is the culprit. there may be a workaround but I havent found it yet
The disk is 6.2 gig. I wanted to make a 5.2 gig partition for Mandrake during installation, and leave 1 gig for win98.
There was a partition of this size on the disk with Mandrake installed on it. But this was installed with the other motherboard which I sold. So I planned to do a new install with the new motherboard, but it hangs.
I had the same problem for the past two days now. But after a few days of search on google, i have found out how to fix it. When you boot from the cd, it brings up a prompt asking you to push enter or F1 for advanced options. Push F1. Once you do that, you will see a prompt like this "boot:". At this prompt type:
"linux pci=bios"
This should solve your problems, at least it did mine. Hope this helps you out
