load xchat / or irc program from clicking ona ling in firefox

EG packetnews.. how can i get firefox to open up the server / channel by clicking on a linik of the type

irc://irc.freenode.net/#ilovequake

with my defaul username etc???

open about:config (type it in address bar)
right click -> new -> string
put for name network.protocol-handler.app.irc
put for value xchat

click a link and it should ask about opening external application, remember this setting etc etc
