libpng+python problem -> guis not starting

Running RedHat 8, KDE 3.1.1

In my quest to install xine and xine-ui I've seen that a newer version of libpng is needed. I've downloaded the libpng-1.2.5, ran "cp scripts/makefile.linux makefile" in the console, then "make test" (was successful), then "make install". As of then I'm not able to run the Package manager, or the redhat-configure-mouse/redhat-configure-xfree86. Tried them from console and there was an error message printed: " python2.2: relocation error: /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0: undefined symbol: inflateInit_ "
Where is the error? I'm not a total newbie, and I've followed the instructions in the install file(s).
Any help will be much appreciated... thank you in advance

The new libpng file is trying to make a call to the inflateInit function which doesn't exist or wasn't compiled in. When you updated libpng did you also update zlib?

inflateInit is a function in the zlib library.

devin.... thank you very very much!
That was it, the zlib wasn't upgraded, and I didn't know I should have upgraded them both (libpng&zlib). With the latest version of zlib, everything's ok!
Many thanks, again!

Errrrrm... after a reboot python started spitting out the same error message.. I've tried to uninstall both libpng and zlib and reinstall them, but (they do install succesfully) that doesn't fix the problem any more. Could it be a problem anywhere else? paths?

Strange.. I can only guess that you have multiple versions of libpng or libz installed in different paths but I really have no idea.

Can you run any python programs or scripts? Can you run python at all ? Check which libraries the python interpreter is trying to access with:

ldd /path/to/python

I know that some distributions install libs to different places then the defaults. Maybe Redhat installed libpng to /usr/lib but then when you installed a new version you installed to /usr/local/lib. Again I don't know.

Check that the paths listed by ldd show the new location and not another location (if they truely are in diff locations)
