The accounts pertain to email. You would generally have one kontact/kmail account for each email account at your Internet service provider. Let's say that you have one email account at one Internet service provider.

Start Kontact or Kmail.
On the Settings menu in the menu bar select "Configure Kmail".
In the "Identities" section you can add an identity. I don't think it's required.
In the "Accounts" section in the "Receiving" tab press the "Add" button.
The account name should be your ISP and/or your account name at your ISP.
The rest should be the same as in Mozilla Thunderbird. Email is email.
Once you've filled in that page click on the "Extras" tab.
Click on the button that says "Check what server supports".
That will fill in whatever encryption your ISP is using for logging in.
When you are finished there click the "OK" button.
That's the first half for receiving email. Now do the same for sending email.
Once both the receiving and sending parts are both done you should be able to send and receive email with Kontact/Kmail.

Thanks for this info, I have done what you suggested however I still get the following error and I don't really know how to deal with it:-
Could not connect to host www.1and1.co.uk.
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used:
auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk

What do I do know?

It sounds like Kontact/Kmail isn't logging in to the server. You will need to provide your user name and password. This is part of the Kontact/Kmail setup. When you put in the account for email you need to put your user name and password in both the "Receiving" and "Sending" part of the setup. You will probably want to check the box that tells Kontact/Kmail to remember your password. If this is for a machine that only you use then this is okay.

Most of these kinds of problems are simply due to not having the user name and password in Kontact/Kmail. However you may also have this kind of problem if you aren't using the correct encryption for logging in. That is what the box that says "Check What The Server Suppports" is supposed to do for you. It should automatically check off the correct encryption on the "Extras" tab.

If your Internet connection is dial up then make sure that you are connected to your Internet provider when you do these steps.

Go over the configuration again. Make sure that you have put in the user name and password for both sending and receiving.

Your Internet service provider may have instructions for setting up email for a Microsoft mail client. The steps are almost identical. Check that to see if there is anything else that they require you to do. Whatever steps are supposed to be done for Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird are also available for Kmail.

Does anyone know how to setup apell in kontact. It works from the cmd line but if I try to spell check a mail I get the following error:-

ISpell/Aspell could not be started. Please make sure you have ISpell or Aspell properly configured and in your PATH.

As I said aspell seems to run at the cmd line.

All so does anyone know how to configure the kontact handbook to work in the help I keep getting a popup that tells me Application Manuals missing
