Kernel compiled for AMD

I have a question about kernels begin compiled for different architectures.

If I compile a kernel for my AMD64, boot with it and then compile other applications under this kernel. If I then compile another kernel for i386 and boot with that...do I need to recompile my applications under the different kernel? Does the architecture the kernel is compiled for have any bearing whatsoever on how an application is compiled?
