KDE sound

Hi. I setup a Debian system for my family a couple of months ago and just now recently they asked me why there wasn't any sound. Appearantly they had no sound all this time but I remember compiling sound support in for them and testing it under my account which is using fluxbox and it worked well. I tested it again just now and there's sound... But when I use the account of someone in my family to log in to KDE (which is what they use) they don't have any sound. I though I just had to mess around with the sound settings using alsamixer but that's not working. So it must be KDE related since I just doubled checked the permissions for audio.
Any ideas of what I might be able to do?

Yes. I found nothing there which should cause this no soundiness...
Any specific options there I need to enable or disable?

sometimes the autodetect option for sound hardware doesn't seem to work. you might try to explicitly instruct it to use alsa.

non-kde applications should be fine without arts, actually (though it could be that only one application at a time can play a sound).

try this:

Code:
chown 666 /dev/mixer
chown 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
KDE arts, alsa, they are all buggy IMHO. I never had those problems with older distributions...

Thanks for the help. I spent some time fiddling around and I can't really what it was that fixed it... but it's fixed now. Thanks.
