installing linux slackware 10.1

I'm having a problem installing linux slackware 10.1 I have a bootdisk which I know works because im taking a linux class in college works on their pcs. I popped in the bootdisk to the floppy drive. Rebooted, did fdisk/mbr on the a: drive. I cant seem to get fdisk /dev/hda1 running. Says Invalid Media type reading drive C abor, Retry, Fail? The only thing I can do is run fdisk but it only allows me to make dos partitions, dont want dos. Jus t linux. Any ideas... some info about pc, Its has a pentium D 64 bit, had windows xp pro. I've already deleted the partitions using the fdisk utility however would like to use fdisk /dev/hda1 dont remember what I am missing. Any ideas?

You are using a DOS boot disk with the MS version of fdisk. You need a linux boot disk with the UNIX version of fdisk. You can boot directly from the first Slackware CD. If your PC does not support it, there is a universal boot disk that will allow you to boot from almost any device. It is included on the Slackware in the isolinux/sbootmgr (sbootmgr.dsk is the image name) directory. You'll need to use one of the rawrite tools to write the image to a floppy.

Also the propper command to partition the primary master drive is fdisk /dev/hda , the 1 in hda is the first partition.

Do you know where I might be able to get that universal boot disk ? Oh also, I do have 2 cds with iso1 and iso2 for slackware 10.1 however pc wont boot from them. Any urls that you can think of that make bootable cds for linux slackware with the isos or linux bootable floppys ?

I left out the first Slackware CD.

Ok, anyone know where I can get a bootable linux floppy disk off the net ? for slackware 10.1 thanks

If you have a Windows PC, download this http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/.../RAWRITEXP.EXE .
Then run the app and where is says image file point it to D:\\isolinux\sbootmgr\sbootmgr.dsk . Make sure you have the Slackware CD 1 in your drive.

Once the floppy has been created, boot to it with the PC that you want to install Slackware on. The floppy will load and a program will appear on your monitor that will give you a selection of boot devices to boot from. Make sure your Slackware CD 1 is in the drive.
