Installing Java for Iceweasel

/* Java.com now says that my java is working. Thanks for the help!

I followed the instructions on www.java.com and it hasn't worked. Anyone have a simple step-by-step process to get this working?

Barnes

Which distro? Which version of java?

You probably need libstdc++5.so. Try to run any java-command on the command line and look what happens.

in etch, just do 'apt-get install libstdc++5'

I'm pretty new at this. I "think" I'm running Debian 2.14.3

Hopefully I am getting the latest version of java. Whatever makes things work I guess. I followed the install procedures to put jre1.6.0_01 in /usr/local/java/

Then I linked the plugin libjavaplugin_oji.so to the following:
/usr/local/firefox/plugins
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins

When I test the java, the page reloads, but no applet appears. Hope this helps clarify.

Barnes.

can't you just install java from your package manager?

Ahhhhh! Sounds simple, but alas I'm incompetently new at Linux. How would I do this?

Find Synaptic (it's a graphical front-end for APT), search for Java and install it. There's usually an orange square icon on the top panel of GNOME which you should be able to right-click and select "Start package manager" (or words to that effect).

There is no such thing as debian 2.14. I believe, you use etch.

Have you checked that the links in plugin directories are OK? Do they point to the right plugin? What does iceweasel shwo if you open page 'aboutlugins'? Is java listed there somewhere?

Have you tried to install libstdc++5? You can do it either from command line or by using synaptic or other nice graphical tools.

I found the Synaptic Package Manager, but there isn't one thing named java. There are for example, java-common, javacc, java2html, etc...

I should also mention that when following the initial installer, it says in firefox click edit > preferences, than in the advanced tab click enable java. When I follow this, there is no box/button to enable java at that location.
