imwheel+nvidiakernelmodule=crap

Hello my dearest friends of the LQ-community

On my Slackware 9.1-box, i am trying to get my Logitech MX700 to work properly. I am trying to do this via the way of the Netpimpz (see other threads for the URL). But when I have compiled IMWheel and installed it, I cannot get into X anymore.

After uninstallment of IMWheel, it still wont boot (even after restoring XF86Config to its original state). The logs of starting X are a bunch of crap, but in the end it comes to this:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

It seems IMWheel corrupts the NVIDIA-kernel in my case. When I uninstall the kernelmodule with the nvidia-installer.run-file it confirms something altered the orginal module. A reinstall works and i can boot into X again. But my mouse still isnt functioning at full capability.

I tried compiling IMWheel again, but i got the same result. This time i didnt get a confirmation of corruption.

Something else, when i compiled IMW as normal user i didnt get errors, while compiling when being root, i get the compile error which says is cannot find TeTex. Yep... It is on my system... Dont know if the latter part has anything to do with the problem, but it's some info nonetheless.

Hope any of you reading this can help. I just want to play some UT2004!

Thanks in advance

I never had quite your problems with the NVIDIA drivers. But, the errors sound #@$% familiar. I've got the same driver and X up+running on slack 9.1.

Anyway, I think * maybe * imwheel corrupted your X configuration. Try running /usr/bin/X11/xfree86setup (as root) see if that works.

Furthermore:

Any conflicts or screens missing? Maybe X can't find any because they simply aren't there. Try compare your /etc/X11/XF86Config to mine (I assume you're using 24 bit depth).

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "nvidia"
Monitor "iiyama"
DefaultDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768/85Hz" "800x600" "1280x1024" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubsection

Good luck!!!
