MacOSX is based on FreeBSD and OpenDarwin, but the system has various custom components installed. So, while it is easier to port console based applications between them, it is different for GUI programs, as they use a different Graphical system(Aqua). So, the GUI applications are not portable. I hope this was what you were confused about.

Hmm yeah i understand that part of the GUI its like kde n gnome using different libraries. wouldnt it just be easier to release the libraries for the aqua gui and port... i do understand that porting can be done, and if its easier to port to linux than to windows, then why dont they... im sure someone will one day

Why should they release the Mac applications for Linux? Apple wants people to buy Macs, it's really not in their interest to release any of their Mac specific apps on Linux. It's not like there is a massive market on Linux for the types of apps they sell. They don't even really sell much software in the first place, the money is in those sexy G5s and getting people to upgrade to the latest version of OSX. If you could run th Mac versions of everything on Linux then you have less of a motivation to buy a Mac. Just like if you could play every Windows game on Linux you would have less motivation to buy a copy of Windows (or realistically a box with Windows on it). Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?
