Question GRUB commands???

HI,

I have installled Slackware 10.1. Every thing went fine and installation was successful. But when it has booted for the first time, it stoped at "GRUB:"

I have no idea what the commands are to obtain graphical interphase. Althouugh, i did try "startx" but it did not work.

Any help??

Typing "help" at the grub prompt will show you all the commands.

You need to tell it what disk partition has the kernel in it, using the root command. If /dev/hda1 is the one, then it'll be "root (hd0,0)" - grub supports command completion, so you can just put in "root (hd" and then tab for the rest.

Then you tell it which kernel to use. Something like "kernel /boot/vmlinuz"

Then just "boot"

Once you're into your Slack installation, it's time to "cd /boot/grub" and edit your grub.conf or menu.lst file and find out why it isn't working already. Once this file works, Grub should give you the GUI on reboot.

HI,

thanks for your reply.

would it look like this if splitted in step by step format??

GRUB: /dev/hda5 (hda5 is where i have installed slcakware and pehapse kernel too??)

GRUB: root (hda0,0)

GRUB: root (hda then "tab" button

GRUB: kernel/boot/vmliuz

GRUB: boot

GRUB: cd /boot/grub

Am i right?

Close!

Assuming you don't have a separate /boot partition that the kernel is installed on, you'll need:

GRUB> root (hd0,4)

GRUB> kernel /boot/vmlinuz
(unless you renamed your kernel of course)

GRUB> boot

At this point, you should be booted into slackware. From here you can edit Grub's config file
