a few days ago I went from fedora core 4 to fedora 7. I used gftp in 4 but it doesn't seem to be available in 7 so I attempted to installed the rpm from the fed 4 dvd I have, but I get an error because of two dependencies that I need (libcrypto.so.5 and libssl.so.5). I assume these are packaged somewhere on the fedora 4 disc I have but I can't seem to find them. For now I'm getting by with the text-based ftp but I would really like to return to gftp. Please advise
Thank you. I was able to gain gui access to ftp through nautilus. I chose this way to avoid using yum as I'm working with a dial-up connection right now and so I rarely download. One more question please, how does one chmod files and change upload mode (binary, ascii) when using nautilus? Sorry, but since I wasn't sure how to do this and I had to upload an image and text file, I used text ftp in terminal to make sure I could switch between binary and ascii.
You would chmod the files the same way you would if they were local (assuming you have permission): Right-click on the file and select properties, then permissions. The file transfer is always binary, so the file is transferred in its original form. The ascii transfer mode of ftp is only useful when the ftp server is running on a non-ascii machine (like a z-series mainframe running z/VM, which uses ebcdic instead).
thank you much for your help, i learned something about ascii and binary, didn't know that the platform of the host company could affect file xfr, again, thank you: )
