General Configure/Compile Question

After becoming intimately familiar with the installation process for Qmail (using the guide on Qmailrocks), said familiarly coming from several aborted install attempts, and one re-install of SuSe Linux 9.1 Pro, I've noticed several warnings in the compile step having to do with incompatible pointer types and something being "real" instead of "int."

These are warnings only, not errors. Searching and reading on several sites like this one, the only information I could find was something about header records, and having the source code of the Linux Kernel available to the compile.

I found and installed the Kernel source code, using YAST, but have not yet had a chance to try the compiles again. Can anyone confirm or deny that the Kernel source code needs to be "installed" to get rid of these warnings?

Thanks,

D.

Deny

I always compile my own kernel and don't delete the sources 'just in case'. I too get warnings when compiling. Most of them can be ignored (as long as they are warnings and process keeps running). A lot of them are known by the gcc builders (don't ask why they haven't been fixed yet ).

PS: It also doesn't matter which distro you use. Seen this with all distro's.

the warnings are there to help programmers
there are different switches in gcc that turn on various warnings
they are not a problem
they are just there to remind programmers to not overlook questionable stuff.
the gcc people are not so gently trying to bring linux code up to more modern standards
